Songs for our Savior: What Child is This?

Micah 5:3-5

Therefore He will give them up until the time When she who is in labor has borne a child. Then the remainder of His brethren Will return to the sons of Israel. And He will arise and shepherd His flock In the strength of the Lord, In the majesty of the name of the Lord His God. And they will remain, Because at that time He will be great To the ends of the earth. This One will be our peace.

Lyrics

What Child is this, who, laid to rest,

On Mary's lap is sleeping?

Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,

While shepherds watch are keeping?

Chorus: This, this is Christ, the King,

Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:

Haste, haste to bring Him laud,

The Babe, the Son of Mary!

Why lies He in such mean estate,

Where ox and ass are feeding?

Good Christian, fear: for sinners here

The silent Word is pleading.[Chorus]

So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh,

Come, peasant, king to own Him.

The King of kings salvation brings;

Let loving hearts enthrone Him.[Chorus]

“What Child Is This?" is a Christmas hymn whose lyrics were written by William Chatterton Dix, in 1865…At the time of creating this hymn, Dix served as an insurance company manager and had been struck by a critical illness. While recovering, he experienced a spiritual revival that led him to write several hymns, including lyrics to "What Child is This?" …The lyrics of the carol are taken from a poem written by Dix called "The Manger Throne". The part of the poem that was utilized as the song's lyrics consist of three stanzas in total. The first verse poses a rhetorical question in the first half, with the response coming in the second half. The second verse contains another question that is answered, while the final verse is a universal appeal to everyone urging them "to accept Christ." (Godtube.com/What Child is This?)

Dear Lord,

At some point, every human heart, in some form or fashion will ask the question, "What Child is this?". May we answer with full faith, proclaiming the truth to those around us: "You are King of kings, Lord of lords, Prince of Peace, Savior of the world. You give hope; You give joy; You give freedom; You give life... right now AND forever." Dear Jesus, thank You for purposefully coming to us as humble Child, God with us. Amen
