"Practically Divine" - Week 4

Well, here we are, four weeks in. People say that it takes 3 weeks to create a habit. If that is true, those of you still with me are here for the duration. Yay! It’s good to travel in a group.

If you have been in and out for the previous three weeks, though, you are still welcome. You are VERY welcome. I want to remind you that the reason we began doing summer book clubs years ago is our understanding that summers are different and inconsistent by their very nature. Having a book gives us the freedom to check in and out as our schedules allow. Don’t get discouraged if you aren’t able to join us every, single day without getting off track. You are exactly who I’m writing this guide for.

Today, read chapter 3 of “Practically Divine.” It’s a long chapter, and it’s filled with goodness. So, take your time. The last two weeks, I’ve listened to Becca read the chapter on Audible while I’ve followed along in my own copy. It has been such a treat to slow down enough to listen and read the words.

This particular chapter has challenged me. It’s called “We can make it” and is all about arts and crafts. The chapter describes many of the ways creating through arts and crafts has brought healing to Becca through her story and the stories of other women.

Here’s the thing…. I can’t make anything. Honestly, I don’t really want to. In my younger years, I would have read a chapter like this one, closed the book, and felt completely defeated and inadequate. I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I probably would have attempted to make myself an arts and crafts kind of girl for a season. The beauty of growing older is freedom in ‘knowing your lane,’ and crafting is not mine.

However, I’m taking away the reminder that I was created in the image of my Creator which means there is a part of me that needs to create. It’s in my DNA. I believe the same is true for you.

Maybe you do love to create, so this chapter hasn’t been a huge stretch. But, if you’re like me, and you can’t even think about learning to weave, or paint, or stitch, I want to encourage you to take some time to consider the ways that you are wired. Where do you notice a passion to create? If that question is difficult in any way, we get to go to our Creator in prayer and conversation. He will guide, and I believe this is a path towards further freedom; for us and for those we will serve.

God, lead us today. As I’m writing and praying, I feel a stirring in my heart that You are going to uncover goodness this week. I have no idea what it will look like. But, I trust You. Don’t let us miss your guidance. Don’t let a single one of us count ourselves out of the lessons of this week simply because we don’t consider ourselves “crafty.” Cause us to lean in and ask You all the questions. You are the Creator of our soul. Since You created us on purpose and for a purpose, I know You delight in uncovering more of that purpose for us. We can't wait to see what You show us. Amen.
