ACTS of the Apostles - Learning to be Daring & Dynamic
Read Acts 8:26-40
Focus Verses: Acts 8:30-31
So Phillip ran to him (the Ethiopian) and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
I love the book of Acts. I enjoy the simple and obedient faith of these early believers, and I'm amazed by the timeliness of God in their lives.
In our passage today, God told Philip to go, and Philip went. On the way, he passed a certain Ethiopian who happened to be reading from the Isaiah's scroll where he was prophesying about Jesus. What I love most about Philip is his joy and excitement to join this Ethiopian in transit and explain the details of the Gospel story with him.
God will direct our activity when we follow Him. He will tell us where to go and what to do. He is so faithful to do for us exactly what He did for Philip. Our responsibility is to obey.
What do you think would have happened if Philip had chosen not to obey and go? What would have happened if he'd walked along the right path, but he didn't pay attention to notice what the Ethiopian was reading? Or, what if he'd heard all of it but chose not to engage in any way?
I can't be sure of the answers to these questions. But, my guess is that Philip would have missed out on the blessing of partnering with God. I believe someone else would have had the joy of sharing the Gospel story with the Ethiopian.
I don't want to miss out on any blessings God has for me. I bet you don't either. I've never done this before, but I want to invite you to listen to a worship song while focusing on God and His direction. As you sit, ask God to speak to you, to guide you, to direct you in some way. Then, write out anything you believe you hear Him saying to you.
Since we've been invited into relationship with our Creator God and relationship is 2-way, let's not miss the opportunity to hear from Him.
God, we want to hear from you. Teach us to enter into real relationship with you and allow you to lead our lives. You are sovereign God. You know the beginning and the end. Why wouldn't we look to You and follow Your way? Give us courage to step out in faith. Help us not to fear messing up or hearing incorrectly but to trust your patience and kindness with our journey. Amen.
