ACTS of the Apostles

Learning How to be Daring and Dynamic

Read Acts 9:1-22

Focus Verses: Acts 9:3-5

Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven shone around him. And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And he said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.”

This is probably the most familiar story in the book of Acts and it’s a powerful one. In brief, Saul encounters Jesus and is blinded (literally) by his glory, but ironically, Saul begins to see the truth of Christ for the first time. God speaks to Ananias sending him to Saul, who has had a vision of him (Ananias) touching him to restore his blindness. Ananias has heard the reports that Saul is a persecutor. God assures him in no uncertain terms that Saul will be “a chosen instrument to spread his name” (v.15). Ananias obeys in spite of his doubts.

As I read this passage, the first thing that came to mind was how direct and intentional Jesus can be when he wants to make a point. His light was like no other, his voice and directions were unmistakable. He brought a believer and a former persecutor (whom he blinded in order to see the light ) together to use them to spread his name further and wider. This is one of those stories in the Bible where God is LOUD and CLEAR and in my opinion, makes it very hard to deny Jesus is alive and is the Messiah. It’s a great reminder that as we are seeking the Lord, our job is to obey and follow the directions he gives us. Can you imagine the life Ananias and Saul would have missed had they not followed the directions? I know in my own life, if I choose not to obey him, the Lord has a way of offering many opportunities for me to ACT. As I’ve aged, I have learned it’s a waste of time and energy to “wait” when I know I’ve been told to “Go”. I am the one missing out if I choose to stall. The reality is I have a finite amount of time and energy remaining in my earthly life. The question is how will I choose each day to use it?

Is there a time in your life that you can pinpoint when you encountered the truth of Christ in some way? It can be concerning your salvation or your sanctification (growth). We are meant to share our stories for the glory of his name. If you have a story, please share in the comments below.

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for stories that clearly show you are alive and well and you can be crystal clear with direction. Your ways and directions are always best for everyone concerned. This story today is yet another reminder “that in all things God works for the good of those who love him , and have been called according to his purpose”(Romans 8:28). Help us to be the people that seek you and ACT when we have been given clear direction. Let us not waste precious time and opportunities you give. Amen
