The Gospel of Luke—Lent 2022

Read Luke 4:14-43

Focus Verse—Luke 4:17-19 The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to (Jesus). Unrolling it, he found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, Because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

ACTion for Reflection: A Proclamation of Service

Jesus came to us on purpose and with a purpose. He was the fulfillment of Old Testament prophesy. When He stood in the synagogue and read from the scroll of Isaiah, He was reading scripture that Jewish people knew. They'd read these scriptures before. They didn't realize they were being read by the Anointed One. Amazing!

I think it's interesting that the people were amazed at the authority Jesus had. He taught with authority. He cast out demons with authority. He healed Simon's mother with authority. Scripture doesn't record that anyone is amazed by the miracles. They are amazed by His authority.

Throughout the rest of Luke, we will read fulfillment of this Old Testament prophesy. He'll continue to preach the Good News, and the religious will continue to be angered by the way that He does it. He will heal the sick, free the captives, and recover sight for the blind.

The definition of the Gospel is "good news." We get to share the GOOD NEWS with authority. Let's do that together today.

ACTion to Live Out: Spread God’s Word

An idea for today is to give a Bible with a note of encouragement to someone who is in need of Good News.

Dear Lord Jesus, Thank you for teaching us how to live! After we daily reflect on your life-giving words, help us to then, through your Spirit, get up and ACT. Give us hearts of compassion, hands of generosity, and feet that take your good news to the world. What an honor it is to be your image bearer. Amen.
