ACTS: A Way to Live

The Gospel of Luke—Lent 2022

Read Luke 4:1-13

Focus Verse--Luke 4:1

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert, where for forty days, he was tempted by the devil.

ACTion for Reflection: Satan tempts Jesus

When Jesus was tempted by Satan, He had to face temptation as a human being, not as God. Notice that in our passage He didn’t try to fight it with sheer will power the way we often do. Instead, He used the Word of God—the Sword of the Spirit—against the temptations (Eph. 6:17). Satan offered to give Jesus all the earthly kingdoms in exchange for bowing down and worshipping him. Jesus shut him down each time by using scripture: “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’” “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’” And “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

Satan tries to tempt us the way he tempted Jesus. So…we should do what Jesus did. We should use God’s Word to slice through that temptation and obliterate it. Think about any temptations, idols or strongholds that are keeping God from being absolutely first in your life. Find Bible verses that deal specifically with that temptation and pray God’s word over that stronghold. Then ask the Holy Spirit to flood the space vacated by that sin and restore you to wholeness in Jesus’ Name.

ACTion to Live Out: How to fight temptation

An idea for today is to show someone who is battling temptation or a stronghold how to be free of it. Let them know that they can fight it with scripture the way Jesus did! Make a scripture card with James 4:7- “Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” and give to them. Suggest that they read it aloud until the temptation loses its hold. Encourage them to create an arsenal of scriptures that fit what they are facing to use as weapons whenever Satan comes against them.

Dear Lord Jesus,

Thank you for teaching us how to live! After we daily reflect on your life-giving words, help us to then, through your Spirit, get up and ACT. Give us hearts of compassion, hands of generosity, and feet that take your good news to the world. What an honor it is to be your image bearer. Amen.
