ACTS: A Way to Live

The Gospel of Luke—Lent 2022

Read Luke 10:1-24

Focus Verses—Luke 10:1-2

After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, to send out workers into his harvest field.

ACTion for Reflection: Equipping Disciples

At this point in time, many more than 12 people have been following Jesus. In this passage we see Jesus sending out some of these followers two by two. These appointed people were not unique in their qualifications. They were not better educated, more capable, or of any higher status than any other Jesus followers. What equipped them for this mission was their awareness of Jesus’ power and their vision to reach all the people. Often we find new believers that have an understanding of the Gospel, want to go to work immediately contacting unsaved people. However, Jesus provides instruction here about how to go from city to city during this time period. This story would suggest an approach by first mobilizing people to PRAY (always the most important place to start in my opinion). Before praying for the unsaved people, first pray for other concerned disciples to join in reaching out to them.

As we read further in this chapter we see that Jesus instructs them when they encounter rejection (v.16). We see him warn them of being prideful (v.17,20). In verse 21, he even rejoices with them when they return. If we pay attention to what Jesus is saying, it’s comforting to know he always gives exactly what we need. His instruction is complete and he equips the unequipped for the job at hand.

The main reason we are doing this Lenten study is to learn more about Jesus. Think about each daily lesson in that regard. Ask yourself what “new” have you learned about Jesus today. For me, this passage has reinforced all the instructions and valuable information needed are there for me to do what he asks me to do. The problem I often have is that I rush right in and do it my way rather than asking him how to proceed each step of the way. Yet, another reason prayer and reading the Word is important every day. If we stop long enough to do those things we will find his ways always work better than ours.

What “new” has this passage taught you today?

ACTion to Live Out: Go where God sends and spread the Good News

An idea for today is to invite a friend to share God’s love together. Plan a volunteer opportunity to an outreach organization or the two of you could go visit a widow, the lonely or someone not feeling well. Take flowers, cards, baked goods, working hands or listening ears. Go two by two as the hands and feet of Jesus.

Dear Lord Jesus,

Thank you for teaching us how to live! After we daily reflect on your life-giving words, help us to then, through your Spirit, get up and ACT. Give us hearts of compassion, hands of generosity, and feet that take your good news to the world. What an honor it is to be your image bearer. Amen.
