The Gospel of Luke—Lent 2022

Read Luke 8: 1-18

Focus Verse—Luke 8:11

Jesus said, “This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God…”

ACTion for Reflection: Teaching Creatively

In this portion of our journey with Jesus, we see that he is traveling with his disciples and some women. Everywhere he went, he was "bringing the good news of the kingdom of God" (v.1).

At one of these stops, a large crowd had gathered to hear Jesus teach, and this time he told a story (or parable) about the seed and the sower. Can you imagine being present in the crowd, sitting there, intently listening to him unfold this story for the very first time? I'm sure people were soaking up his every word.

Jesus often taught in parables, and then he would reveal its meaning. In this case the seed was the word of God that fell onto four different parts of the ground: along the path, in the rocks, among the thorns, and then into deep rich soil. Jesus explained, that each of these places represented the heart, both then and now. What a great analogy to consider when contemplating the condition of my own heart!

We too can either retell these stories or use other pictures in scripture to help someone understand God’s word. For example, other things Jesus uses in his teaching to explain his truths are: light, water, Potter/clay, house built on a rock/sand, and sheep. I love the simplicity of Jesus' teaching. (We are the ones who tend to complicate it.)

ACTion to Live Out: Share God’s Word in a way that makes it easy to understand

An idea for today is to donate children’s Bible story books to a church, organization, or even to someone you know. If you get the chance, you could also read a parable from the Bible to a group of children or one special person.

Dear Lord Jesus,

Thank you for teaching us how to live! After we daily reflect on your life-giving words, help us to then, through your Spirit, get up and ACT. Give us hearts of compassion, hands of generosity, and feet that take your good news to the world. What an honor it is to be your image bearer. Amen.
