Friday, March 3, 2023 A Journey with Jesus during Lent Day 9 Matthew 26:40-41 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter. “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” I wonder what it was that caused them to fall asleep. Was it simply pure exhaustion because it was the middle of the night? Did their own sorrow and confusion overwhelm them to put them in a slumber? Did their sleep, protect their hearts from their escalating mounting fear? Certainly extreme fatigue and grief at the shocking uncertainty was taking its toll on Peter, James and John. It seems that the weakness of their bodies trumped their willing spirits. For we know that their willing spirits wholeheartedly believed in Jesus Christ as the son of God. For us, as we sit on THIS side of the cross, we have the amazing assurance that we are sealed with the Holy Spirit to call upon, fill us and carry us when we are physically weak and failing. The Holy Spirit will always fill in the gaps when we are in need! The weak become strong. The sorrowful become filled with joy. The overwhelmed become wise and secure. We only need to ask in prayer. When you know your flesh is weak, do you call upon the Holy Spirit to see you through? Dear Jesus, We praise You and give thanks that we get to journey with You through this season of Lent. Draw us closer to Your heart, that we might know You better. After we daily reflect on Your selflessness and life-giving Word, give us wisdom to be Your hands and feet in the world just as You intend. Give us hearts of compassion, hands of generosity, and feet that take Your good news to the world. We love You and are honored to serve you Lord, our sweet Savior. Amen.
