Monday, February 27, 2023 A Journey with Jesus during Lent Day 5 Matthew 26:26-30 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

It hit me again while writing this post, our scripture reading is Jesus introducing communion literally for the very first time to his disciples! Do you think they had any clue that this communion ceremony was going to be in remembrance of what He was about to accomplish on the cross? Probably not! Jesus created this communion ceremony for all who were to come as a sweet reminder. It blows my mind that we still partake in this communion today, all according to His will. As human beings, we often need a ceremony filled with symbolism to help us remember the important things in life. Think of all the things that involve a ceremony - a marriage, a death, a birth, a baptism. Each of these important moments have a ceremony attached to them, designed to give significance and help us remember the moment and its special meaning. I have memories of our wedding ceremony that are so vivid and detailed, as if I was right back in 1991...but ask me what I did yesterday and I am stumped! A ceremony will stick in our minds and then with repetition, it will help solidify our beliefs. Jesus used the words, “Mark my words” to make sure his disciples would remember the significance of it all. From the bread to the wine to the act of consuming them to the gathering of believers - all highlighted at the last supper for the disciples and now for us as children of God under the new covenant! What a gift. What does communion at the altar mean to you? Dear Jesus, We praise You and give thanks that we get to journey with You through this season of Lent. Draw us closer to Your heart, that we might know You better. After we daily reflect on Your selflessness and life-giving Word, give us wisdom to be Your hands and feet in the world just as You intend. Give us hearts of compassion, hands of generosity, and feet that take Your good news to the world. We love You and are honored to serve you Lord, our sweet Savior. Amen. Week 2 Act of Kindness “For I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink” Matthew 25:35b This week, donate water to a homeless shelter or make a donation to a “clean water mission” organization (i.e., Splash.org, Water.org)
