A Journey with Jesus during Lent

A Journey with Jesus during Lent

Day 32

Matthew 27:57-61

As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.

We discover from commentaries and other Gospels, that Joseph of Arimathea was not only wealthy but also a prominent member of the Council who was waiting for the kingdom of God. He went boldly to Pilate asking for Jesus’ body (Mark 15:43). Luke tells us that Joseph was a good and upright man. He also states that he had not consented to the decision and action of the Council to put Jesus to death (Luke 23:50-51). John tells us that Joseph was a disciple, a learner, a follower, and adherent of the Lord meaning he took Christ’s instruction and made it his rule of conduct. Yet he was a follower secretly because of his fear of the Jews (John 19:38). This is interesting since we discover in our verses today Joseph approaching Pilate, casting his fears aside, boldly asked for Jesus’ body.

This was Joseph’s time to act. His mind and heart had been moved. He could have been ridiculed or punished; yet he didn’t make excuses. His fears went away as he acted with his faith, passion, and purpose. Joseph laid Jesus in his own new tomb. Just think about it…On earth, Jesus never owned a house to lay His head in while living nor did He own a grave to lay His body in when He died. He didn’t need either very long. Jesus was buried to prove His death. Joseph was the one God called to assist with the burial. So, he stepped out of the shadow and did something big and brave.

What is God asking you to do today (even if it takes you out of your comfort zone)? Whatever it is, will you commit to walk out in obedience? Be bold! Remember that God will equip you. He didn’t call us to be comfortable. He called us to follow Him.

Dear Jesus,

We praise You and give thanks that we get to journey with You through this season of Lent. Draw us closer to Your heart, that we might know You better. After we daily reflect on Your selflessness and life-giving Word, give us wisdom to be Your hands and feet in the world just as You intend. Give us hearts of compassion, hands of generosity, and feet that take Your good news to the world. We love You and are honored to serve you Lord, our sweet Savior. Amen.

Week 6 Act of Kindness

“I was in prison and you came to visit me” Matthew 25:36c

This week, help someone who can’t help themselves or has gotten themselves into trouble; or volunteer for a prison ministry organization (e.g., Kairos or Crossroads).
