A Journey with Jesus during Lent

Day 29

Matthew 27:49-50

The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”

And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.

The mockery and maliciousness towards Jesus continue throughout his last breath. However, what the people torturing Jesus didn’t know was that Jesus was willing to suffer through a shameful death on the cross because of the joy He knew would come (Hebrews 12:2). He was carrying out the plan designed by God for our salvation. When Jesus cried out at the end, “It is finished” (John 19:30), it was a cry of victory.

Max Lucado wrote, “The Son of God became the Lamb of God, the cross became the alter, and we were ‘made holy through the sacrifice Christ made in his body once and for all time’ (Hebrews 10:10). What needed to be paid was paid. What had to be done was done.”

Today, my words are short so you will take time to sit in silence and meditate on Jesus’ final words and moments as He hung on the cross. Find a song about the cross that speaks to your heart and just listen, sing, pray or be still. Give thanks to God for the sacrifice of his son as the Lamb of God and let Him know that you entrust Him with your life for eternity. There is nothing we can do to repay Him, as Jesus paid it in full!

If you found a song that resonated with you about Jesus’ victory on the cross, would you share your song with us and others?

Dear Jesus,

We praise You and give thanks that we get to journey with You through this season of Lent. Draw us closer to Your heart, that we might know You better. After we daily reflect on Your selflessness and life-giving Word, give us wisdom to be Your hands and feet in the world just as You intend. Give us hearts of compassion, hands of generosity, and feet that take Your good news to the world. We love You and are honored to serve you Lord, our sweet Savior. Amen.

Week 6 Act of Kindness

“I was in prison and you came to visit me” Matthew 25:36c

This week, help someone who can’t help themselves or has gotten themselves into trouble; or volunteer for a prison ministry organization (e.g., Kairos or Crossroads).
