A Journey with Jesus during Lent

Day 23

Matthew 27:37-38

Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews. Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left.

I have sat with these two verses for a LONG time. Struggling about what to write. Finally, after a LONG conversation with my Lord on a LONG walk, He gave me what I am to emphasize to you (it is not the direction I was going.) What I am to point out is this; it is important to read and understand the whole picture of the portion of scripture that you are reading. I’m sure you know this. So why I am saying it again? I’m not sure but perhaps we need the reminder? If we just read these two verses by themselves (go ahead and read them again), we might see an image in our head similar to this- three crosses in a row, three men hung on cross being crucified, Jesus is in the middle, a sign is put above Jesus’ head that says who he is and what crime he committed. That’s it, that’s what we’ve got.

BUT

With knowing the whole story of who, what, where, when and the WHY of Jesus, we can conclude from the image in our head, the significance of what Jesus did on the cross for us. Reframed, it looks like this: Three crosses... One dying in sin One dying to sin One dying for sin Jesus died for sin, our sin, all of humanity’s sin. As believers and followers of Jesus, we are made right with God because Jesus died on the cross and we live eternally with Him! It truly is the greatest non-fiction story ever told. What stood out to you today?

Dear Jesus, We praise You and give thanks that we get to journey with You through this season of Lent. Draw us closer to Your heart, that we might know You better. After we daily reflect on Your selflessness and life-giving Word, give us wisdom to be Your hands and feet in the world just as You intend. Give us hearts of compassion, hands of generosity, and feet that take Your good news to the world. We love You and are honored to serve you Lord, our sweet Savior. Amen.
