Forty Days of Prayer - Day 2

Day Two

January 7, 2020

Genesis 18:22-25

“The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remaining standing before the Lord. Then Abraham approached and said: “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked? What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it? Far be it from you to do such a thing, to kill the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?”

Today we start our devotion with the reminder that we are all interconnected and our faith can impact others. Abraham teaches us the importance of intercessory prayers, leading by example as he approaches God in compassion to ask Him to forgive, save and bless others. This is a divine exercise that not only Abraham practiced, but Jesus himself did and still does today (Hebrews 7:25, Romans 8:34, John 17, Luke 22:32). Do you think God listens and hears the intercessory pleas of His Son? Of course, He does. And He will hear the pleas and prayers from us as well.

As you are creating your “impossible prayer list” I encourage you to add a person who needs you to intervene for them. It will be powerful. This could be a child who needs God as a priority in their life, a spouse who needs physical or spiritual healing, a neighbor who is going through a tough time, a friend who is struggling to make ends meet, etc. Prayerfully consider inviting that person (or persons) to join you in prayer and even consider asking them to walk this Forty-Day of Prayer journey with you. Pray boldly and watch God’s power at work! You won’t regret it.

Dear Heavenly Father,

I come to you today on my knees in thanksgiving for all the intercessory prayers that have been said on my behalf and for the privilege of praying for others. I thank you that through your name, I can come boldly before you and pray with confidence, according to your will and know that you hear me. Oh, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, you are mighty and your power is great. So, it's in your name that I pray - and believe. Amen
