Songs for our Savior: The First Noel

Luke 2:8-11

And in the same region from there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”

Lyrics

“The first Noel the angels did say

was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;

in fields where they lay keeping their sheep,

on a cold winter’s night that was so deep.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,

Born is the King of Israel.”

“The First Noel” is of Cornish origin, which is a county in South West England in the United Kingdom. Its contemporary style was originally printed in Carols Ancient and Modern (1823) and Gilbert and Sandys Carols (1833). Noel is actually an Early Modern English synonym of "Christmas".(Godtube.com/ The First Noel)

Dear Lord Jesus,

As the angels announced long ago, YOU are the "good news of great joy for all people"! Make us like the shepherds in the fields on that First Noel...fill our hearts with wonder all season long and cause us to run to You in worship and adoration. Amen.
