2 Peter—Know the Truth

Today’s reading: 2 Peter 3:5-7

But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

Water….it’s something we tend to take for granted every day. Just think about how God has used it in powerful ways since the beginning of time. The same God who used his word to create the earth with water and flood the earth with water can also use his word to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants. His word is all-powerful. We need to know the truth about His power and promises of what’s to come for this world for the righteous and unrighteous.

In today’s scripture Peter is saying that false teachers forget the origin of the world, which they say will just keep going as it always has. They dismiss the return of Christ and the time of judgement. Peter is writing to prove his point that God has the power to intervene at any point and accomplish His will. And everyone should be prepared; just as he sent rain, he can send fire. “But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases.” (Psalm 115:3)

The message in 2 Peter may seem repetitive, but it’s because we desperately need these reminders and warnings. Our God is powerful and almighty. We must know and cling to the truth of God’s word. We must not be fooled by false teachings. Jesus’ return is imminent. As Christians, we can look forward to the new heavens and earth which will come after judgement time.

Dear Heavenly Father,

We come to you in thanks for how you have worked in miraculous ways since the beginning of time. Your word tells us history of what you’ve done in the past and what to expect in the future. We want to continue to KNOW THE TRUTH and be awakened by the warnings off false teachers. We look forward to renewal and trust in you that your goodness prevails for your children. In your son’s name we pray. Amen
