What a great time to praise the Lord. He has risen ,He has risen indeed! As the focus verse says, “ Cry aloud and shout for joy”. As we continue to socially distance ourselves from one another , celebrating Easter yesterday looked different for most of us. Different doesn’t mean bad or unpleasant or that it would not happen, it just means different. The Lord is our sanctuary whether we worship in an actual building called a sanctuary or not. Our physical sanctuary can be anywhere. Yesterday, most of us were probably in the confines of our homes or outside in nature worshiping.
I find it interesting that in the dark, damp, hopeless cell where Paul was incarcerated was the very place he wrote his book to Timothy. This book is filled with wisdom, and a message of light, hope, and eternal life for everyone that would believe. That cell that appeared to be so void of a future was a sanctuary that enabled him to write about the sanctuary we have in Jesus in words that we are still reading today. How grateful we are that God used Paul’s grim circumstances in such a mighty way for His glory.
What a “coincidence" we are all quarantined right now. For some, this may feel like heaven on earth; no reason to get dressed to go out, just stay at home in your safe place wearing your safe clothes. For others this confinement may be starting to feel like a jail cell for a variety of reasons - some not humorous at ALL. Either way, this place where we find ourselves confined is only a structure that can offer only so much. Our real sanctuary is wherever we experience God. It’s where our heart is. Like Paul, we can call out to Our Sanctuary anytime, any place. Just as in Paul’s life we are not promised pain free living. We are however promised when we call His name, He hears, He cares, and He answers. Don’t let your physical circumstances overshadow what He offers your soul. The Lord is our safe place. He is our holy place of security. The moment we choose to believe in Him, He remains safe in life, safe in death, safe in judgement, safe in eternity. He is our resting place, our rejoicing place, and our sanctuary. “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart” (Psalm 91:4).

Oh God, You are Our Sanctuary. You are our refuge like no other can possibly be. We are grateful to have You as a safe place all day, everyday, and in all circumstances. We ask that you give us rest when it’s needed, safety when we are vulnerable, and calm where there is anxiety. We proclaim that a day in Your courts is better than a thousand outside- let us not forget that! Hallelujah that Your wings are big enough to envelop all that believe in You! Thank you for being the One that always listens , cares ,and answers. God, You are our Sanctuary. Amen.
