Forty Days of Praise: Encourager

Thursday, March 5

“Now may the God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus.” Romans 15:5

Like many of us, I live life much like the title of Kelly Clarkson’s famous song, Miss Independent! I try to be self-sufficient, to do things all on my own. And like many, that’s when I find that my life starts to fall apart. I keep forgetting that God’s presence, His Holy Spirit, is inside me and that I never have to face anything alone. “He set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit...” (2 Corinthians 1:22) God deposited his Holy Spirit into every one of us, so that wherever we are, He is there, too. Whatever we are going through, He is going through it too, encouraging us always.

How awesome is it that we can be in God’s presence 24/7—while we are doing life? How can we not be encouraged by His continual presence? Ezra expressed it this way: “...So I was encouraged, as the hand of the Lord my God was upon me...” Ezra knew he could handle anything because God’s hand was on his shoulder, infusing him with strength and determination, guiding him. God encourages us from His place deep inside our spirit.

We have so many promises from God that He will take care of us, direct us, bring us joy, and hold us up when we don’t have the strength to stand. God told Moses, “My presence will go with you...” David sang in Psalm 16:11, “You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy...” God told Isaiah, “...I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” God spent a lot of time encouraging the people of Israel all throughout the Bible. He still encourages us every day. Be revitalized as you read his promises. Praise Him for encouraging you through people and circumstances. Thank Him that He is our God forever!

Our spotlight verse tells us to “be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus.” We are to be imitators of Christ and do the same thing that God does: God encourages us, so we need to encourage others as they struggle in life. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 tells us to pass on what God has given us: “Praise be to...the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.” So, I ask you Sister, who could you pour into today with words of encouragement? Life-giving words or actions from you may be just what someone else needs. I challenge you to pray for God to show you today who and how you can encourage.

“God, You are the Encourager! When I am worried, stressed or afraid for the future, Your Presence surrounds and fills me, making me safe. When I feel inadequate, You let me see myself through Your eyes—redeemed, restored, complete in You. When I am discouraged, You lift up my head and flood me with Your strength. When I am confused as to what to do, You clarify my calling in You. God, I praise You for being my God, my All-in-All! Thank You for always encouraging me, for making me able to keep on going. Please help me show Your love to others by encouraging them through my words and actions. I love You with all my heart. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
