Forty Days of Prayer -- Day 10

January 17, 2020

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you.

I don't know that there is a prayer recorded in the Bible that I pray over myself and my family more often than this one. Each and every morning, I ask God to create in me a pure heart and renew a steadfast spirit in me before I ever open His Word and study. Do you know why I do this? It's because I KNOW the impurity and anxiety in my heart. I also know that nothing hinders experiencing the presence of God like impurity and anxiety. I want God to deal with it, replace it with His steadfast Spirit, and speak clearly to me.

I absolutely LOVE that Kit pointed out in today's reading that this is a prayer we can be sure is God's will for our lives. We can pray David's prayer from Psalm 51 with all confidence that we're praying in line with God's will. That gives me such comfort.

When I ask God to give me something, do something for me, or change a specific circumstance, I can't be sure He will do it. BUT, when I pray for a pure heart, and steadfast spirit, and humility, I know He will do it because this is what He wants for us.

So, pray these words today and trust God's heart to answer it. When you face frustration today, thank God that He's using the disappointments fo this world to answer your prayer. He's creating a new heart in you. He's making something out of nothing IN you and IN me. Wow! That's amazing to think about.

God, what a lesson! It is so much more exciting to ask for gifts and wait expectantly for them. Give us eyes to see as you see. I pray the words of this Psalm have convicted all of us to approach the throne of grace with humility. Help us to remember that we possess zero purity and steadfastness without You but we possess every bit of it IN You. Thank you for being the provider of every good and perfect gift.
