Silent Night

Isaiah 9:2-6

The people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, The light will shine on them. You shall multiply the nation, You shall increase their gladness; They will be glad in Your presence As with the gladness of harvest, As men rejoice when they divide the spoil…. For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

Lyrics

“Silent night! Holy night! All is calm, all is bright ’round yon virgin mother and child! Holy infant, so tender and mild, sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night! Holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight. Glories stream from heaven afar, heav'nly hosts sing: ‘Alleluia! Christ the Savior is born! Christ the Savior is born!’

Silent night! Holy night! Son of God, love’s pure light radiant beams from Thy holy face with the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth! Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth!”

“Silent Night" is a popular Christmas carol, composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr in the small town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria… Mohr wrote this hymn as a celebration of the anticipation of the arrival of the newborn savior…The hymn was first performed on Christmas Eve 1818 at St Nicholas church in Oberndorf, a village in the Austrian Empire on the Salzach river in present-day Austria. A youthful priest, Father Joseph Mohr, had arrived in Oberndorf the year earlier. (Godtube.com/Silent Night)

Dear Lord, thank You for that silent night long ago when Christ was born. Even as Jesus laid in the manger he was Lord! During the holiday season, may we celebrate the birthday of our Savior who came not only to show us how to live and love, but to give us life eternal. Please help us focus on the true meaning of Christmas this holiday season and remember He was born to die and save the world. All glory to God. In Jesus' name. Amen.
