Grateful for Growth: Being in His Word

Psalms 19:14

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your Sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.”

I have grown in my desire to walk with God in His Word. So many of us have stated that we have been guilty of “reading” our Bible so we could get that “check mark” in the box on that Sunday envelope. I am guilty as charged. I have repeatedly made the New Year’s Resolution that I would not pick up that book that I could not wait to see what will happen in the next chapter until I have read my Bible, only to break it within the first month. To make sure I could check that box, I would catch up on Saturday and read a week’s worth. The questions are why and for whom? It certainly wasn’t for spiritual growth. In all honesty it had to be so I would “feel good” and whoever saw that envelope would say “Good, Kathy read her Bible.” However, there was no growth there because there was no preparation in my heart to see the beautiful message of love and redemption throughout its entirety.

Over the last 3 years, I have been challenged by many of you, seeing the knowledge you have of the scriptures, and knew that it was something that was greatly missing in my life. I had those verses we learned in Sunday School and Bible School as children down pat. But they were there just because of memory drills, not because I had truly hidden them in my heart, focusing on the true meanings of the scriptures. 2ndChronicles 7:1 says “We should honor God and try to be completely like him.” How could I know God, honor God, and be like God without fully seeing Him in the scriptures daily and wrapping my mind and heart around his word.

I have found that my quite time has grown as I began with pray, pen in hand, and an open heart to hear from God, knowing that he wants me to meditate day and night on his word, to see it playing out in my life, enriching me daily. It is no longer a duty to be done for the “check in the box” but it is a deep desire to know and honor Him. Without studying and meditating (my new word for 2020) on the scripture, how can I be like Him? How can I truly “Grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ for me.” Ephesians 3:18

Additional Verses: 2 Timothy 2 :15, Colossians 3:23

Lord, I thank you for the teachings in your word. In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God and the word was God. The words you spoke brought all things to be, and the words you spoke to your servants make You are ever present to us today. I thank you for the truth of your word and the promises there that we can cling to. Through your word we see your amazing love, and your plan to drawing us to you through your Son. Help us to meditate on your word today, strengthening us to be your light.

Amen
