"Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, 'You are my witnesses today that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion and Mahlon. Moreover, I have acquired Ruth the Moabites, the widow of Mahlon, to be my wife in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance, so the name of the deceased will not be cut off from his brothers or from the court of his birth place; you are witnesses today.'"
Last week, we read about Boaz's promise that he made to Ruth in the middle of the night. Yesterday, we were "one of the witnesses" in the cultural handing over of the sandal as a sealing of the kinsman redeemer-contract. Today, with one shoe on and one shoe off, Boaz, wild at heart, runs to his bride and shouts, "You are mine!". What a picture of true love played out!
Matthew Henry, in his commentary says this, "Boaz by making a public declaration of this marriage and purchase, not only secured hustle against all pretenders...but put honor upon Ruth, showed that he was not ashamed of her, and her parentage, and her poverty."
Boaz's declaration of love and willingness for all to see and know it, once again, is a beautiful picture of Christ's love for you and me. There is no shame in His pursuit nor His pledge. His love is purely driven, and we are His prize, no matter our past history, our present "status" or our future "credentials". None of that matters; He sees the heart.
Can you hear the Lord say to you, "I choose you", "I love you", "I want you by my side FOREVER!"? This is my prayer over each one of us today...that we would be convinced of the "chasing-down-and-I got you-love" of our Kinsman Redeemer. Remember this amazing truth: Jesus left behind the glory of heaven to come and give His life so that we may share in His inheritance! He has pledged His PERFECT love to us today; He has sealed His love within us by giving us his Holy Spirit right now.
See your Kinsman Redeemer running towards you in joyful victory today. Hear Him say to you individually, "Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine!" (Isaiah 43:1). Breath in, and breath out, Love.
