Read: Genesis 3: 1-10 (Read at least 3 times and maybe in a couple of translations).
Reflect: I have no doubt you have read this portion of scripture many, many times. We can read something so often that it becomes too familiar. Often, passages of scripture can be read as history, and we never even think to apply it to our current lives. I believe the Genesis account is one of those passages. But, wait… Adam & Eve were given instruction by God, they second guessed His wisdom and care, and chose their own way.
That seems like a familiar path to me. In the scripture, the first man and woman hid from God when they felt the shame of their disobedience. Were they fearful of His response? Were they disappointed in themselves? I imagine they experienced both emotions, and they demonstrated what we all do in our fear and in our failure…. We attempt to hide from The One that sees and knows all. Without a doubt, FEAR of any kind will cause us to shrink back, to hide, or to miss out on living what God planned.
Respond: God’s question to Adam and Eve may be the same thing He’s asking us today,
“Where are you?”
I’m positive God knew exactly where Adam & Eve were hiding. He didn’t ask the question because He couldn’t find them. He asked the question because they needed to evaluate their position for themselves. It was in their best interest to acknowledge their physical, emotional, and spiritual location. It’s in our best interest to acknowledge and confess to the Lord our location, too.
Where are you right now? In what ways are you shrinking back or hiding out? Spend some time journaling your thoughts with the Lord. Ask for His guidance to show you where you need to confess and where you need to step forward and trust.
Renew: Just like God came to Adam’s rescue in the Garden,He will come to your rescue today. We weren’t created to stand still in fear and shame. We were created to move with audacity into the plans God has for us as believers. As you pray today, I’d like you to use the following verses. Insert YOUR name for every “you” or “me”. Cry out to God for guidance. We want to end this study focused and ready to complete the work He started in us with boldness. If we are going to end the study well, we have to take to time confess in our beginning.
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there be any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.” Psalm 139: 23-24
“For God did not give (your name) a spirit of fear but rather of power and love and self-control.” 2 Timothy 1:7
“For (your name) has not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again but (your name) has received a spirit of adoption as sons which we cry out, ‘Abba! Father!’” Romans 8:15
Father God, if we are going to see clearly, You will have to uncover our eyes. I have no doubt that some of us are hiding in shame, fear, unbelief, or confusion. Life can be so hard. But, I also have no doubt that You intend to use any evil against us for good. You mean for us to live FULL lives with YOU as our leader. I pray that this journey will lead us right to Your presence where You will equip us for all You've planned for us. Amen.
