Matthew 4:19-20

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him.

I am a fisherman! But I’m not just any kind of a fisherman, I’m a fly fisherman! There is just something special about getting on my waders and putting my line in a fast-moving mountain stream. The sound of the rushing water, the smell of the damp, pine needle filled forest floor and the chance encounters with creatures large or small all makes for an exhilarating experience! The opportunity when out in God’s creation to commune with Him on a very personal level is something I treasure. It was there, while in the mountains of Tennessee, that God heard my cries. It was there that he answered my prayers for purpose and identity after the deaths of my son and husband. It was there that Jesus called me to truly and in fact become His fisher of people!

For me, the focus of my call to GO for Christ revolves around a 72-hour spiritual retreat sponsored by The Upper Room called The Walk to Emmaus. Having been on a recent retreat not long after my husband died and almost immediately after crying to God to show me how my story could be used for His purposes, I was humbled to be asked to not only serve on a Team but to give a talk to the attendees. God so clearly told me to be His hands and feet. My story of tragic loss would be used by Him as an example to other women that you can live again. In the Walks I have worked I have witnessed women who have experienced so much pain through loss, abuse, disease, abandonment and betrayal awaken to the realization that our pain and loss does not define us. When we lay our burdens at the foot of the cross and truly leave them there, we become free for God to use us as an example to others on trusting our Lord and Savior to support us and strengthen us through all of life’s trials. As a disciple of Christ, I want and need to share God’s love to others, especially to women who are hurting. Life isn’t fair and can sometimes be most difficult, but when we let Christ carry our burdens, we are able to truly GO for Christ!

Living God,

Long ago, faithful women proclaimed the good news of Jesus’ resurrection, and the world was changed forever. Teach us to keep faith with them, that our witness may be as bold, our love as deep, and our faith as true.

In Jesus name,
