Monday, April 8,2019: He will give rest.
Verse: Matthew 11:28: Come to me all who are weary and heavy - laden, and I WILL give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you WILL find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.
Post: Not too terribly long ago I didn't fully understand this verse. I thought it meant I was to lay down and take a cat nap when I was tired and I would be refreshed and ready to go. You know, those days that you feel like so much is going on in your life and are so tired you need a power nap. I didn't fully grasp this verse until I was in a place of feeling so heavy and burdened I was unable to move, make decisions, or seem to go on with the business of life . I remember opening the back door feeling like I was walking out into the line of fire with bullets shooting directly into my gut- over and over again. It was painful and oh so heavy and for me, was the place I reached out for Jesus.
Yes ladies, my burden had reached a point of being too heavy for me to carry. I began to dig into this verse and found some comfort. I learned that burdens can be sin, excessive demands, oppression and persecution, or just weariness in the search for God. In fact I think all these things can be present at the same time sending us straight downhill unless we reach to the One and Only that can truly answer us and give us the rest we need. I learned that Jesus is the only One that can fill that void in my life. He is the only place I can find true rest. Not the power nap kind, rather the rest that provides love, healing, and peace with God that I so desperately needed. It wasn't the kind of rest where all labor ended. That's not what this verse is referring to. It's the relationship with God that can change the meaningless and wearisome toll into spiritual productivity and purpose. And for the record, this did not happen overnight. He also sent His soldiers to love me, listen to me, bear with me, and point me toward Him. At the time all I could feel was pain, but looking back I see His sweet provision custom made for me in a way only He could do it.
This was most definitely a process that included time and reliance on the Lord step by step. Nothing happened overnight. But slowly I began to feel the burdens lifting. When we find ourselves in these places, He provides His yoke to carry that heavy weight we have and wants us to be reliant on Him for our daily bread. My painful time I am referring to was both a painful and beautiful place to be and I wouldn't trade it for the world. It's a place I found Jesus . It's a place where I now go daily for a quiet time with Him to fill up for the day. It's necessary, it's life, and it's the rest my soul needs every single day.
Our additional verses today are filled with hope of where and how we find rest for our needy souls. Take the time to read and be filled up and hold on to the fact- He WILL do it because He says so.
Additional verses: 1 Kings 19:1-18; Psalm 62: 5-8;
Psalm 131:1-3; Isaiah 30:15.
Heavenly and Gracious Father, In You we seek rest. Your word say, "For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and salvation, my fortress ; I shall not be shaken" Psalm 62:5-6. Help us to hold on to the One and Only that can be our refuge and rescue us. Some of our burdens today are so very heavy Lord, we cry out to you now. Take us by the hand and pull us out of despair. Let us cling tightly to You and find the rest we so desperately need. "On God rests my salvation and my glory, my mighty rock, my refuge is God" Psalm 62:7. Give each one of us the desire to be in relationship with You daily seeking this refuge and refueling we need to go on with the business of life. In Your name we pray, Amen.
