In reading the Ephesians 6 passage for three days now, I have been keenly reminded of the battle that we are up against every day. Wow, I need to wake up and get dressed in God's armor because the enemy doesn't take a day off! We are called to be on the alert and to "stand firm against the schemes of the devil" (v. 11). The piece of armor we are focusing on today is the shield. God instructs us to "take up the shield of faith so that we can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one" (v. 16).
As I was investigating, I found out that the ancient Roman shield was “made from goatskin or calf skin which was stretched over sturdy pieces of wood. It stood four-feet long and three-feet wide…Before going into battle, Roman soldiers drenched their leather-covered shields with water. When the fiery arrows of their enemies struck these soaked shields, the flames were immediately extinguished” (The Armor of God, Rose Publishing). Just as these water-drenched shields protected the soldiers physically, our Living-water-based-shield protects us spiritually. It's a good idea to take some time to give a name to the flaming arrows that are coming your way personally. Here are some that tend to fly in my direction:
Flaming Arrows: fear, confusion, worry, disappointment, doubt, inability...
When I don't hold my shield of faith in front of me, I am free game to an all out attack, and I tend to go down in a heap in half a second or less! But when I am prepared, and when I do choose to raise my shield, these arrows bear no weight. My shield contains His promises, and these fiery arrows simply get quenched with Truth. For example, when the arrow of "inability" flies my direction, I raise my shield and say, "I have the all surpassing power of the greatness of God living inside of me!" (from 2 Corinthians 4:7); then this flaming dart fizzles out and falls to the ground.
What promises do you need to hold up in front of you in order to extinguish the fiery darts of your enemy? Do you BELIEVE in these promises? Remember, this piece of armor is called the shield of FAITH. God will always stay as BIG as He is, but sometimes our shield (our belief) becomes small. In your journal, or better yet, for the encouragement of other potentially weary "soldiers", make a comment below about a promise of God that you are holding up today. Then, use this promise as a powerful shield all day long as your enemy sends his arrows in your direction.
Dear Lord God,
You are strong and mighty, holy and good. YOU are our ultimate protector. Cause us to believe in ALL of who You are and ALL of what You say! As we put our faith in You, we ask You to extinguish the darts of the enemy coming towards us. You promise us, "No weapon formed against you will prosper" (Isaiah 54:17). Thank You, sweet Savior. Let us be strong in the power of Your might as we continue to fight on this battleground called life. Thank you for lending us every bit of Your armor. We hope in You. We believe in You. We hold up Your living word as a shield and we press on. In Your Name. Amen
