Vessel (Pouring In)
John 2:1-10; Romans 5:5; Ephesians 3:19-20; Psalm 119:11, 57
Read and then meditate or write in your journal anything that speaks to you.
The miracle of Jesus turning water in to wine has always fascinated me. And there is so much in John’s account of this story that I would love to dive in and explore in greater detail. (Like the way Jesus spoke to his mom for one!) But for now, let’s focus on the fact that the jars, the vessels, which Jesus had directed the servants to fill with water were transformed by Him in to wine. And, it is important to note that the transformation didn’t yield just any-ole, cheap, “box of wine” type beverage, but instead, a full-bodied, perfectly-aged, fine wine fit for a king. In this miracle, Jesus changed something ordinary in to something exquisite.
Now what is easy to perhaps miss in this story of the first miracle is that the jars were initially empty. And it was only after they were filled up that the transformation took place. You see, ladies, we are like the vessels in this story… empty and dry. When we are filled up with God’s Word and with His Spirit we can expect His miracle. It is then, when we are filled to the brim with Him, that He can transform us, taking something void of substance and creating something of treasured value.
Can you give an example of a specific circumstance in which you know you felt God pouring in to you through His Word and/or His Spirit? Could you feel a transformation happening inside? Make no mistake about it, God is still in the business of working miracles. So if you are feeling depleted, emptied, and parched – seek Him, fill yourself with Him and expect to see a revival of your soul.
We praise you and thank you for pouring in to our empty lives. We know you can change us, but how easy is it for us to settle for the ordinary. Forgive us when we don’t believe that you can pour into our lives and create a transformation that is more than we could ever ask for or even imagine. (Eph 3:20) Lord you tell us in Revelation 2:5 that you make all things new. Create a miracle in us, transform us by Your Spirit and Your word and make us new in You. Change our hearts and our minds and our actions so that others see this miracle, so that others see that you’ve taken something ordinary and created a masterpiece. Lord may our cups runneth over with you. In the precious and holy name of Jesus! Amen.
